Tom Daley, Jonathan Ross & Kylie Minogue
I’m just filled with love for Chris Colfer and his acting ability today, so I had to share some thoughts. I just love how Chris puts so much time and thought and effort into developing Kurt Hummel as a character. He has shared in interviews that he didn’t want Kurt to be too flamboyant in his personality and become just another caricature of a gay man on television. So he made the character a little more reserved and aloof. He based the character somewhat on a cat - a little distant, a little above it all, graceful most of the time (but spectacularly clumsy on occasion). I also remember him talking in another interview about how his acting is 80% physical. He’s also talked about how fun it was in The First Time to shoot a scene at a bar because it gave him so many things to do and play with - swiveling in the chair, drinking from a straw, etc. It makes me wonder about how much time he spends coming up with all of these little physical moves and moments that he brings. In the background or in the foreground, he squeezes everything he can out of every moment of screen time. He’s always doing something interesting.
I included a few moments of that in the photos - licking the whipped cream off his fingers when drinking hot chocolate, using that swivel chair and fancy drink to his advantage, and in this kiss with Blaine - I just love what he does with his arms here. It’s so much more interesting than fully wrapping his hands around Blaine. It makes him look so relaxed and ready, so his decision to initiate sex with Blaine is incredibly believable. It’s a small thing, but it makes such a big difference.
I really hope that someday we get an in-depth interview with just him about his acting. Maybe another actor’s studio appearance or something. Because I would love to hear more about his process for coming up with all of this. It’s truly incredible and it keeps me itching for more screen time from him - on Glee or in other future projects.
I’m so glad we can show our love with PCA voting, too. Here’s the Facebook voting link if you’re so inclined. Or you can vote on Twitter by including Chris Colfer #comedictvactor #PeoplesChoice in the tweet.
Nothing to really add except I agree with all of this. I so want him to do an interview like that - just him & the interviewer. Or even a book/memoir down the road (but not TOO long after Glee) I sometimes wonder if he realizes how special his acting ability really is? Sometimes I think he thinks it’s nothing - just something that comes naturally to him and isn’t really a big deal. As a totally amateur actress since HS (community theatre), I’ve been struggling to learn the craft and make it look as natural as he’s been able to accomplish in 13 years… (and I’ve been out of HS for 25+) I certainly appreciate his talent & skills.
I’ve been thinking about this ever since 5x06 and the back and forth about the awkward hug.
I remember the way Kurt rubbed Blaine’s back after the Scandals’ scene — really fast and to me kind of weirdly spastic. But he does the same thing in the bedroom scene — and I kept thinking about how Chris has said he thinks and is so mindful of the physical aspects of his acting choices, and know that he thoughtfully does that, it’s a part of how Kurt touches.
To be fair, I didn’t think that bedroom scene was awkward at all, but I was in the minority there.
I have a lot lot lot of respect for Chris as an actor, and really believe that he brings the utmost care, integrity and thoughtfulness to his portrayal of Kurt.
Also, lovely, lovely thought on Kurt’s arm’s in TFT because I have always just really loved and responded to that, but have never been able to articulate *why*
Oh, I like the comparison of the backrub in 305 when they were walking out of Scandals with the backrub during the hug in 506. I think that’s a good parallel.
